A champion is an individual inside the prospect's organisation who actively advocates for your solution when you are not in the room. They are not simply a friendly contact or a power user. They have influence over the decision, access to the economic buyer, and a personal stake in the outcome. Building a champion is the most reliable way to navigate complex, multi-stakeholder deals.
A coach gives you information: org charts, internal politics, timelines. A champion fights for you. The distinction matters because many sellers mistake a helpful contact for a champion. A true champion will make internal presentations, handle objections from colleagues, and pull the deal forward when it stalls. A coach will pass on useful intelligence but will not put their reputation on the line.
Champion development starts in discovery. Identify who has a pain point that your solution directly resolves, and who gains status or safety by making the project succeed. Equip them with the commercial case, the language to sell internally, and a clear picture of what the deal needs from their side. Test them: if they do not follow through on agreed internal actions, they are a coach, not a champion. Multiple champions reduce deal risk; single-threaded deals are the most common source of pipeline collapse.
Champion qualification is one of the highest-leverage skills we develop in Closing OS Enable work. A seller who has mistaken a coach for a champion will run a deal differently to one who has correctly identified a champion and knows what they need to succeed internally. In deal inspection sessions, we ask three specific questions: has the champion done something internally on behalf of this deal? Have they brought anyone else into the conversation? What have they committed to for the next step? Reps who can answer all three have a champion. Reps who cannot have a coach, and that changes the next action entirely.
